Within the last two years, I have switched to using as many natural hair care and body products as I can. I have found that I love Burt’s Bees shampoo, conditioner, and face wash, Tom’s toothpaste and mouthwash, and Whole Foods 365 brand lotion. I have DEFINITELY noticed a difference in natural products compared to normal ones that are loaded with chemicals and not necessarily good to be putting on your skin. However, natural products (especially Burt’s Bees) tend to be more expensive than normal products, which I am willing to pay for the quality, but I am trying something new with my hair that is cheaper and probably better for it. I am…
not washing or conditioning it, at least not with conventional shampoo and conditioner.
I have heard before that shampooing strips our hair of its natural oils, which means our bodies over-compensates by creating more oil, which means we need to keep shampooing! So I am trying out a method I have wanted to try for a while, but didn’t have the energy or time to begin while I was still in school.
The method is basically to use baking soda (about one tablespoon mixed with 8 oz. of water) a few times a month in place of shampoo, and to use apple cider vinegar (one tablespoon diluted with 1 cup of water) a few times a month in place of conditioner.
I haven’t washed my hair with “normal” shampoo and conditioner since Friday, and yesterday I rinsed it with the baking soda mixture and then the apple cider vinegar mixture because it was really oily, and it definitely helped. I even got a hair cut today and the lady still said I had “nice hair,” so it must not look or feel too gross. From what I’ve read, it might take a couple of weeks for your body to get completely used to it. I’ve read several blogs about people who have done this and they all say that the end, maintainable result is shiny, healthy, beautiful hair. That’s what I’m holding out for at least!
I like how http://simplemom.net/how-to-clean-your-hair-without-shampoo/ explains the method. I’ll keep you updated on how it works out!
